The Maverick Hotel : Eco-Luxury Retreat in Laamu Atoll

Maverick Hotel Maldives : Eco Luxury in Laamu Atoll

Concsious Check-In : Edition 3

This month, I’m changing things up slightly by spotlighting a property that’s not brand new, but is brand new to me!

When you picture the Maldives, it’s easy to imagine big-name branded resorts promising barefoot luxury across postcard-perfect private islands. With so many interpretations of paradise all including overwater villas and beach bungalows and offering fine dining of evey cuisine, there’s something for almost every kind of traveller.

But what if you’re craving something deeper? A genuine connection to Maldivian culture, sustainability, and a sense of place beyond the postcard gloss?

The Maverick Spirit

Enter The Maverick Hotel, a boutique eco-resort living up to its name. Set on the pristine island of Mundoo in the Laamu Atoll, this independently run hideaway is a refreshing alternative to the norm.

Here, safari-style tented lodges are tucked within lush greenery, just steps from the soft white sand and a brilliant house reef. Each airy tent is fully air-conditioned, fitted with fast Wi-Fi and thoughtfully designed in an “expedition chic” aesthetic. (Imagine Darwin had landed there in HMS Beagle and decided to set up home under canvas!)

Inside, you’ll find king-size beds made with luxurious cotton linen and fluffy white towels that hang alongside the organic toiletries by the private outdoor showers.

A Window into Local Life

Situated in the little touched marine paradise of the Lamuu Atoll, the island of Mundo is a domestic island with a population of just 167 inhabitants, welcomed within the resort to chat to visitors and share stories of their daily lives and local customs.

This authentic interaction forms the heart of The Maverick’s mission: sustainable travel that supports and celebrates, rather than disrupts the local culture.

Adventure Above and Below the Surface

This unspoiled area of ocean is one of the main draws here whether you are happier on or under the waves.

  • Surfing: The breaks here are legendary . “Machines” is a quick 5-minute Dhoni ride away, while “Sarongs” is just a short paddle from shore. With uncrowded waves and expert local surf guides, it’s an experience that feels truly exclusive.
  • Diving & Snorkelling: With fewer resorts in the area, dive sites are untouched and vibrant. You’ll find coral gardens teeming with turtles, reef sharks, and even manta rays, including a nearby cleaning station that’s swimmable right from the beach. The on-site reef is ideal for snorkellers and the resort’s guides can lead excursions to hidden underwater gems.

Eco-Conscious Comfort

Sustainability runs through every detail at The Maverick. The resort is powered primarily by solar energy, and its beachfront restaurant focuses on fresh, locally sourced produce often grown on its own organic farm. Ingredients that can’t be grown or fished locally are sourced directly from small suppliers, ensuring transparency and reducing waste.

Biodegradable packaging, composting systems and a zero-plastic policy all underscore the resort’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

The result? Cuisine that’s fresh, flavourful and frequently cited as a highlight of every guest’s stay.

Raise a Glass (on the Water)

For something truly special, visit The Maverick’s floating bar, a converted boat where you can sip cocktails, nibble on canapés or join a wine-tasting experience surrounded by playful dolphins.

Getting There & Going Beyond

Laamu is accessible via seaplane or a short domestic flight from Malé, followed by a 15-minute speedboat ride to Mundoo Island.

If you’re planning a longer stay, consider pairing The Maverick with the nearby Six Senses Laamu – an ideal combination of barefoot luxury and authentic island culture, both leading the way in responsible tourism and community engagement.
